Obama admin delays major requirement of health law

WASHINGTON — In a major concession to business groups, the Obama administration Tuesday unexpectedly announced a one-year delay, until after the 2014 elections, in a central requirement of the new health care law that many companies provide coverage for their workers or face fines.

Nothing ‘friendly’ about this friendly

It’s not to the insane, bitter level of India against Pakistan in cricket. As rivalries in sports go, three wars over Kashmir alone sort of gives those batting a ball around a circular pitch the edge on hatred for one’s opponent.

Creative twists turn up the heat on popular summer flavors

Some flavors simply shout “summer.” The zing of fresh jalapeno peppers, tangy barbecue sauce, and pickles so crisp they make your mouth tingle are all flavors you savor as the weather gets warmer. But have you ever thought about using those awesome summer flavors in extraordinary new ways such as topping a cake with barbecue sauce, using jalapenos to make ice cream, or perking up deviled eggs with pickles?

The best lawn games for players of all ages

As long as the sun is shining, it’s time to get outside and enjoy that beautiful lawn you’ve been working so hard to maintain throughout the year. Barbecues and picnics are always a good excuse to get family and friends together but after you’ve finished eating you don’t want the kids (or the adults) wandering back inside to waste a glorious day staring at a television or a computer screen. It’s time for some good old-fashioned backyard fun: lawn games.

Get your ‘fitness on’ this summer to help your favorite park win big

The air is warm, the grass is green, and summer is officially here. What better place to enjoy the summer than at your favorite park?

Parks offer endless opportunities for having fun in the sun. And whether it’s a game of catch with family or a bike ride with friends, getting active has never been more rewarding.

Your tax documents – what to keep and shred

Whether you use old-fashioned manila filing folders, a flash drive or cloud storage, tax and personal finance authorities agree on the importance of saving tax documents and records. In addition to using the information for preparing your next income tax return, it may come in handy years from now.

Weathering the storm: disaster preparedness tips for small business owners

As a nation, we learned several hard lessons following the recent natural disasters in Oklahoma and along the Hurricane Sandy-ravaged East Coast. While we often think of the devastation inflicted upon individual community members, we can’t overlook the effects that natural disasters have on the backbones of our local economies: small businesses.

Commissioners concerned about Welcome to Las Vegas solar ‘trees’

Things could be looking up for North Las Vegas cops, firefighters

All three Democrats taking seats on the North Las Vegas City Council this week said they’re optimistic about resolving clashes with the city’s public safety unions, with newcomers Councilman Isaac Barron and Mayor John Lee agreeing an out-of-court settlement with the city’s bargaining groups was long overdue.

Founding Fathers dined in style on Fourth

A roaring grill and an icy brew are almost as integral to July Fourth as fireworks. But today’s burgers and beers affairs bear little resemblance to the buffet served during our nation’s first Independence Day.

Cookbook reminds that dogs are family, too

Pets are definitely part of our families. I was reminded of that when Annie’s Gourmet Restaurant in Henderson, which has a menu for dogs and allows them on its patio, won Best Family Restaurant in Best of Las Vegas this spring.
