2 found dead in southwest Las Vegas apartment

Las Vegas police said a man and woman, believed to be in their 20s, were found dead Thursday afternoon inside an apartment near Hualapai and Peace ways.

Police responded to the call at Union Apartments, 4450 S. Hualapai Way, about 12:40 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department homicide Capt. Jason Letkiewicz said. A friend hadn’t heard from the man in a few days, went to the apartment to check on him and found the two dead.

It was unclear Thursday afternoon how the man and woman died, though Letkiewicz said the man appeared to have been shot. The pair had been dead at least a day, investigators said Thursday.

Police had not yet determined the relationship between the man and woman. As of Thursday afternoon, the deaths were being investigated as a double homicide; evidence did not suggest the two died in a murder-suicide, but detectives had not ruled it out.

Letkiewicz said the apartment complex had only been open about six months, and police had not been previously called to the address. A neighbor, who watched from her balcony as investigators filtered in and out of the unit where the pair was found, said she hadn’t heard or seen anything happen near the apartment recently.

She added the neighborhood was “quiet.”

The coroner’s office will identify the two people killed once families have been notified.
