Man who Las Vegas police said shot himself has died

The man who Las Vegas police said shot himself in the head after being shot at by an officer has died.

Alan Keith Baker, 42, was placed on life support Tuesday at University Medical Center and died Thursday, the Clark County coroner’s office confirmed Friday.

Baker’s family called 911 about 2 p.m. Tuesday to report he was armed with a gun and knives. They told police Baker had a history of mental illness and had threatened to harm himself.

As officers spoke with the family outside their house at 3305 Lingo St., Baker left the west Las Vegas Valley home in a bathrobe.

In body-worn camera footage shown at a Thursday press conference, Metropolitan Police Department officer Marcus Martin was seen asking if Baker could show his hands. Moments later, police said, Baker pulled a .38-caliber revolver out of his bathrobe and pointed the weapon at officers.

Martin fired twice at Baker, but police on Thursday said it is unclear whether any of the bullets had struck Baker. Police said Baker then retreated out of sight seconds before an off-camera gunshot could be heard, which police believe was Baker shooting himself in the head.

As of Friday morning, the county coroner had not determined his official cause and manner of death.
