Taste of the Town: Need count of Monte Cristos? Just ask the readers
Monte Cristo sandwiches — flavorful, comforting and indulgent, but generally a scarce commodity in Southern Nevada — have come up in this column from time to time over the years, and just the other day a friend mentioned how much she missed the Bennigan’s chain and their “World Famous Monte Cristo,” which still is on the menu at the company’s numerous locations east of the Rockies.
It’s our subject this week because of a request from Richard Markus, who’s looking for Monte Cristos served at lunch.
And his fellow readers have a couple of suggestions. Sharon Bateman emailed that they’re available at The Cracked Egg, which has four locations across the valley. And Aimee Stephens and Janice Giannosa recommended The Restaurant at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St. in Boulder City.
For Tom Reynolds, who’s looking for kosher pickled green tomatoes, Ann Carlton and Gloria Meyers emailed that the Ba-Tampte brand is available in the kosher section at Smith’s at 2211 N. Rampart Blvd., and Carlton said they’re also at Albertsons at 2550 S. Fort Apache Road.
Sheldon Lang reported finding them at many Vons stores, and Ann Brown found them at Glazier’s Food Marketplace at 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. Bobbi Butka of Ivins, Utah, found pickled green tomatoes at Harrie’s Bagelmania at 855 E. Twain Ave. and The Bagel Cafe at 301 N. Buffalo Drive. And Stephens found them at Weiss Restaurant, Deli and Bakery at 2744 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson.
For Mike Paice, Sue Bigsby and Ed Bordenka reported that Big John’s Beans have been discontinued. Bordenka found some online but wonders about their viability eight years later (as do I). But he noted that a recipe at www.cdkitchen.com is “a close approximation.” It’s a pretty simple recipe, starting with a can of standard pork and beans.
More on fish and chips: Paige and Linda Livingston recommended the ones on the daily menu at Miller’s Ale House in Town Square at 6683 Las Vegas Blvd. South, where they noted they’re $4.99 at lunch on Fridays.
For John Bauman, who’s looking for dill rye, the Livingstons recommended the onion dill rye made by Western Hearth by Van De Kamp’s that they get at Food 4 Less at 8180 Las Vegas Blvd. South.
