Dining Pick of the Week: Las Pupusas

Las Pupusas Restaurant

945 W. Craig Road, 702-648-6200

Pupusas are kind of the comfort food of Salvadorian cuisine. Reminiscent of a quesadilla, each thick, handmade corn tortilla is filled with a blend of cooked meat that is ground to a paste, cheese and/or beans. At Las Pupusas, each one is $1.95, and two are more than enough for a meal. Varieties include queso (cheese), chicharron (pork), frijoles (beans), revueltas cheese (cheese, pork and beans), pollo con queso (chicken with cheese), calabaza con queso (zucchini with cheese) and loroco con queso (herbs and cheese). Pupusas are served with curtido, a Salvadorian fermented cabbage salad, and a tangy sauce. Along with the signature pupusas, the vast menu also features a number of other Salvadorian delights, including carne guisada con papas (beef stew) and pollo en crema (sour cream chicken), along with Mexican food, including tacos, enchiladas, burritos, fajitas and tortas (sandwiches). Entree prices average less than $10. Save room for the flan napolitano ($3.99). Beverages include Horchata, a sweet, milky beverage made with almonds and rice. The atmosphere is casual, with diners showing themselves to a table where a server takes your order. Take-out also is available. Other locations are at 641 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson (702-450-0600), 4760 S. Eastern Ave. (702-341-7776), 3111 S. Valley View Blvd., Suite Q105 (702-248-7776), and 7450 W. Cheyenne Ave., Suite 158 (702-248-7776).
