Dining Pick of the Week: Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast

Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast

6720 Sky Pointe Drive, 702-437-5858

Lulu’s takes yum to a whole new level with recipes straight from Mom’s kitchen. Menu items change with the seasons, so available produce determines what’s offered. The setting includes a nod here or there to a different time (just check out the old-fashioned Coca-Cola case). The brick walls, wicker baskets and burlap coffee bags further that feeling. Workers arrive at 4:30 a.m. to start baking that day’s menu items, which include pastries and bread for the thick sandwiches. Breakfast starts with pastrami hash or grilled vegetable hash with eggs for $8. That’s about the most expensive thing on the menu. There’s stuffed French toast with your choice of peaches and raspberries or apples and raisins. The secret to this dish is not the maple syrup or the whipped cream with which it’s served, but the bread that’s not bread. It’s really pastry, which may add calories, but no one’s complaining. The more health-conscious can opt for the triple berry yogurt parfait with house-made granola. No breakfast menu is complete without a breakfast burrito, and Lulu’s kicks things up a notch by filling theirs with scrambled eggs, green chili roast pork, black beans, corn and pepper jack cheese and topping it with homemade tomatillo salsa, Cotija cheese and cilantro. This laid-back little eatery also offers a variety of eggs on a soft roll, with items starting at $6. Lunchtime brings out the salads. The Empire Salad includes pulled chicken, apples and New York cheddar for $8. The turkey burger comes with avocado hummus, spinach, Monterey Jack cheese, roma tomatoes and red onion for $8.95. The traditional grilled cheese sandwich gets a makeover at Lulu’s, with Brie cheese, bacon and peach preserves. Grilled zucchini focaccia has roasted peppers, goat cheese and a balsamic glaze. Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
