Readers roll out good news on lobster dish

Over the years of doing this column it’s become clear to me that it’s the regional foods and foods of our youth that we most often miss when living outside our home base. And Bud Smith’s search for New England-style lobster rolls clearly resonated with his fellow Taste of the Town readers, some of whom said they were New England expatriates.

Ann Brown, Bob Ruszczyk and Pat Ilic all recommended Lobster ME, which has locations in the Miracle Mile Shops at 3663 Las Vegas Blvd. South and the Grand Canal Shoppes at 3377 Las Vegas Blvd. South (although Ruszczyk added that he actually prefers the make-your-own kits from www.GetMaineLobster.com, 866-562-4817). And Ron Jackson recommended Crab Corner at 4161 S. Eastern Ave. and 6485 S. Rainbow Blvd. …

For Chuck Ford, Brown and Ilic said Nathan’s Deli Pickles are available at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. …

More on raclette cheese: Kay Dawson recently purchased it at Smith’s at 6855 Aliante Parkway in North Las Vegas. She and Jan Visser also have found it at Trader Joe’s, which has five stores in the valley. And Brown said she found it at Whole Foods Markets, which has four stores in the valley, but suggested readers call ahead because it’s not always available — advice I’d say applies to all of the listed stores. …

More on chicken mole: Jan Visser recommends that served at Lindo Michoacan, which has three locations. …

More on kishka: Ceci Schreiber emailed that mock kishka, without a casing, can be made with Tam Tams crackers, using the recipe found at manischewitz.com. The crackers, she said, are available in several varieties at Vons at 1940 Village Center Circle, as well as in the kosher sections of some other supermarkets.

NEWS FOR FOODIES

Now that the craziness of the holidays is behind us, the food-related events, most of which benefit charities, are upon us. Among the first is the 26th annual Splendor in the Glass sponsored by Vegas PBS. It’s from 3 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Westgate Las Vegas, 3000 Paradise Road. Hubert Keller, chef/owner of local restaurants Fleur and Burger Bar, at Mandalay Bay and Mandalay Place respectively, will present a cooking demonstration, and the event also will include samples of the wares of more than 60 wineries and breweries, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, a live wine auction and a silent auction, and live music by the Woody Woods Jazz Combo. Tickets are $85 in advance or $100 at the door; advance tickets are available at vegaspbs.org, at the Vegas PBS Educational Technology Campus at 3050 E. Flamingo Road, and at all locations of Lee’s Discount Liquor, Total Wine &More and Whole Foods Market. The event benefits programming and community-outreach programs of KLVX-TV, Channel 10.
