View Dining Pick of the Week: Carlito’s Burritos

Carlito’s Burritos

3345 E. Patrick Lane, Suite 105, 702-547-3592

Inside Carlito’s Burritos, the walls are decorated with colorful traditional Mexican artwork done by a local artist and all for sale. Dried red chili peppers are piled into thick bunches and strung up, hanging from the ceiling like tree branches. The atmosphere is bright, cheerful and family-friendly. Hot sauce acts as the centerpiece for each table. Several flags and maps above the counter show the restaurant to be of the New Mexican tradition, and most of its dishes come with the option of red or green sauce (or you can mix the two). Breakfast is served all day, including breakfast burrito (add meat or smother it for $1 to $2 extra), huevos rancheros and steak and eggs quesadilla. Starters include Smothered Fries, legumbres (Jicama, carrots and cucumbers tossed in red chili and lime juice), Texas chili, posole (New Mexican spicy soup), pork posole, green chile stew and quesadillas. The flour tortilla burritos are enormous and are also available in a bowl. Options are veggie, combo (veggies and meat) and double meat (no rice or beans; smother it for $1 extra). Specialties include tacos, Navajo tacos (a large, flat taco shell with ingredients piled on top), enchiladas, stuffed sopapilla (fried bread stuffed with meat and smothered in chili) and tamales. Add sopapilla (New Mexican deep-fried puff pastries) and two sides for $3 extra. Carlito’s favorites include the Ensalada, the Tortilla Burger served with fries, Frito Pie and spicy Santa Fe Sliders. Daily specials are available and include $1 beef tacos on Tuesdays and two-for-one breakfast burritos on Sundays. The eatery carries many New Mexican products for sale, including fresh green chile and chile ristras. Beers, margaritas and Mexican Coke are on the beverage menu. Menu items range from about $3 to $10. Carlito’s Burritos is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
