World premiere of ‘The Tempest’ leads spring season at The Smith Center
January 16, 2014 - 4:27 pm
The Smith Center’s first world premiere — a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” from Las Vegas’ own Teller — leads a spring season at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts that ranges from old favorites to new attractions.
Among the newcomers: R&B artist John Legend, celebrated soprano Renee Fleming and Broadway diva Patti LuPone. Returnees include comedian Lily Tomlin, violinist Joshua Bell leading the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, trumpeter Chris Botti and jazz singer Diana Krall.
All listed performances take place in The Smith Center’s Reynolds Hall, except for “The Tempest,” which will be staged in a climate-controlled tent in Symphony Park, adjacent to the performing arts complex.
Rounding out the Reynolds Hall schedule: the Tony-winning musicals “Porgy and Bess” (April 15-20) and “Once” (May 2-25), plus performances by the center’s resident companies, Nevada Ballet Theatre (May 9-10) and the Las Vegas Philharmonic (March 8, April 5, April 26 and May 17).
The lineup in the intimate Cabaret Jazz also blends newcomers (including singers Roslyn Kind, Lainie Kazan and Steve Tyrell and veteran comedian Tom Dreesen) with returnees (including singer Jane Monheit, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and resident headliner Clint Holmes).
Tickets for individual performances begin at $24 and are on sale beginning at 10 a.m. Jan. 24 at The Smith Center box ofice, 361 Symphony Park Ave. Tickets also are available by telephone at 702-749-2000 or online at www.thesmithcenter.com.
