Functional fitness trainer hoping to open facility

After nearly six years of personal training, using Henderson parks as his studio, Boris Sapone is seeking to open his own facility.

Whether it is playing soccer or working out, Sapone has always loved being active.

“I love the idea of being physically fit,” he said. “I love the idea of having control over your body.”

It’s that love that he hopes translates over to his gym, Colosseum Training Center, which is slated to open in March in Henderson.

The center is open to people of all athletic backgrounds.

Sapone went to UNLV to pursue kinesiology.

“I had the goal of going to medical school,” he said.

He started training people while working at athletic facilities such as Gold’s Gym.

“I got hooked on helping people,” Sapone said. “I got to help them change their lifestyles.”

After graduating, he decided to continue training, using his knowledge of anatomy to guide him while helping people.

About three years ago, he started workouts with GV Fit Club, which offers programs such as bootcamp and CrossFit in the park.

Sapone describes the routines as functional fitness, which doesn’t use traditional exercise machines.

“We take for granted the machines,” he said. “Functional fitness is based on your body.”

He said people do a lot of jumping, running or squats, things that might help them in everyday situations.

“If you take a football player and made him do a marathon, they might not be able to do that,” he said. “They don’t train for that.”

People who do functional fitness exercises, such as CrossFit or mixed martial arts, might be able to adapt to other fitness regimens, he said.

“They would probably be more successful,” he said.

While training, Sapone has kept up on fitness trends and researched different workouts.

“I am a geek when it comes to fitness stuff,” he said.

Despite what trends might come in go, Sapone sticks to what he knows works best for his clients and their bodies.

Word of mounth and reputation have helped him secure clients such as 2012 Miss Nevada Randi Sundquist.

Loretta Hellrung, has been training with Sapone for about three years.

“And I’ve tried other workout programs, so I have something to compare him to,” she said.

In her workout classes, Hellrung likes the fact that people can be any age or have any skill set and Sapone can work with them.

“He will modify a workout so everyone can do it,” she said. “People always say, ‘I didn’t think I would be able to do that.’ ”

But what sticks out most to Hellrung is Sapone’s character.

“He is just an amazing person,” she said. “He just really cares.”

A facility is his next step. Devoid of machines, the center would have free weights and punching bags and offer classes such as mixed martial arts, CrossFit or bootcamp.

“It has been challenging trying to find a location,” he said.

Hellrung was excited to hear that he planned to open a space.

“I just hope it’s close to my house,” she added.

Even though he plans to open a facility, Sapone hopes to continue offering classes outside.

“Las Vegas gets hot for three months,” he said. “But for the most part, we have pretty decent weather.”

His main goal with the gym is to change the way people feel about exercising.

“I want it to be more of a community feel,” he said, “a camaraderie or a family. If you’re not there one day, people will wonder where you’re at. It becomes part of your lifestyle.”

Despite constantly training others, Sapone takes time to exercise as well.

“It might be 30 minutes,” he said. “But I always find time. It’s part of my lifestyle.”

He said in the years as a trainer, he never gets tired of what he does.

“It’s a lot to balance,” he said. “But there hasn’t been one day where I don’t want to do it.”
