Will your child be affected by CCSD zoning changes?

Clark County School Board members voted on Thursday to make minor zoning changes that will affect several schools throughout the valley next year.

Rick Baldwin, the Clark County School District’s director of demographics and zoning, announced changes at the board meeting that include:

■ Henderson’s McCaw Elementary School, which is becoming a magnet school next year, will share a zone with Robert Taylor Elementary School. Baldwin said almost all of the McCaw students who want to attend the magnet program next year have applied and he expected nearly all would be accepted. Those students in the zone who do not want to attend McCaw will go to Taylor. Kindergarten students are not affected by this change.

■ Those who aren’t accepted to or don’t want to attend Piggott Elementary School’s new Academy of International Studies will be rezoned to Ober or Staton elementary schools. Students who live in the west valley zone will receive priority preference for the magnet program, Baldwin said. Kindergarten students are not affected by this change.

■ An area west of Summerlin’s Rogich Middle School that was zoned for Johnson Junior High School, which will become a magnet school, will be zoned for Rogich.

The trustees did reject one proposal, a change that would have moved 253 students from Reedom Elementary School to Frias Elementary School in the southwest valley.

Trustee Carolyn Edwards asked the board not to approve the plan that would have moved eight housing subdivisions into the Frias zone, because the area could see construction of a new elementary school next year if the Legislature approves rolling over a 1998 construction bond that would allow the district to begin building new schools immediately.
