1 killed, 2 injured in crash at Nellis and Washington

A man was killed and two others were injured Monday morning in a three-vehicle collision involving an overturned tractor-trailer at the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Washington Avenue, Las Vegas police said.

A 1991 Dodge Dakota pickup truck traveling east on Washington Avenue ran a redlight while crossing Nellis Boulevard just after 10:40 a.m. and crashed into a 1997 Ford Escort and a 2016 Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer traveling north on Nellis, police said.

The Ford Escort was forced into the semi, and both ran off the right side of the road. The box trailer separated from the tractor and pushed the Ford through the traffic signal posted on the corner and into the west side of Buck’s Tavern, located at 1204 N. Nellis Blvd.

After separating from the trailer, the tractor continued off the right side of the road, through the traffic signal electrical box and into a heavy post supporting the Buck’s Tavern sign. The 1991 Dodge Dakota came to rest in the northbound lanes of Nellis Boulevard, north of the intersection.

The Escort driver, a 60-year-old Las Vegas man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Clark County coroner’s office will release the identity of the man once relatives have been notified.

The pickup driver, 39-year-old Moroni Calvo of Las Vegas, and a Ford Escort passenger, 19-year-old Faith Hubbard of Las Vegas, were taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit with serious to lifethreatening injuries.

The tractor-trailer driver, 46-year-old Gregory Hunt of Las Vegas, was not injured.

The collision caused the closure of the intersection for several hours Monday.

This is the 39th traffic-related fatality in Metro’sjurisdiction for 2016. This collision remains under investigation.
