Body of male hiker found at Red Rock’s Turtlehead Peak

The body of an adult male hiker was discovered Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy said Sunday.

A man from Seattle said the body might be of his missing brother, Ronald Kirk, who went missing in January.

Murphy said it will take officials days to weeks to identify the body.

"We have found a body and we're trying to identify that particular individual," Murphy said. "We'll be using scientific means to do that."

Murphy said the body was found at Turtlehead Peak.

Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said an individual found the body about 11 a.m. The agency's Search and Rescue Detail then recovered the body and turned it over to the coroner.

Darrell Kirk of Seattle said the keys to his brother's vehicle were found with the body in rugged terrain at the hiking area about 20 miles west of the Strip.

He said foul play was not suspected.

Murphy said it would be inappropriate to comment on the condition of the body. He said personnel in his office have been in contact with Kirk's family.

Ronald Kirk was originally from the Chicago area. He was reported missing Jan. 22 and his vehicle was found Jan. 23 in the Calico Basin area.

He sent family members a text message Jan. 16 saying he was going hiking.
