Cooling stations to open as heat watch issued for Sunday, Monday
The National Weather Service has issued a heat watch for Sunday and Monday, when temperatures are expected to top 105 degrees.
The weather service said that children, homeless people, the elderly and pets are at particular risk but everyone is susceptible to heat-related illnesses early in the summer, when they are not yet accustomed to the 100-plus degree weather.
Cooling stations will be open to the public from Sunday through Tuesday, the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition announced.
During those days, community and recreation centers such as Walnut Recreation Center, Pearson Community Center and Black Mountain Recreation Center will be open to everyone. Shelters such as Catholic Charities, The Shade Tree and The Salvation Army will remain open during the daytime.
Those searching for someplace to get in out of the heat are told to dial 211 from any phone or visit www.helphopehome.org, the planning coalition said.
Temperatures on Sunday and Monday are projected to reach between 107 and 108, with Monday being the hotter day, the weather service said.
As summer continues, meteorologists said, the threshold for heat watches and warnings increases, since such weather is closer to normal and people and pets are more accustomed to it.
The weather service recommends staying hydrated and indoors where it is air conditioned.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion, according to the planning coalition, include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps and dizziness. Then note that pets and children should never be left in unattended cars.
