Coroner identifies man shot through west valley apartment door

A man shot and killed Wednesday through a front door by a resident, who told police he thought the man was trying to barge into an apartment, was identified by the Clark County coroner's office Friday.

Richard Rizal McGee, 31, of Huntington Beach, Calif., died from gunshot to the head and torso, coroner's office staff said.

The shooter told Las Vegas police that he and his girlfriend were awakened about 5 a.m. by shouting and pounding to the door of the unit at The Residence at Canyon Gate, 2200 Fort Apache Road.

The man thought McGee was trying to break in, police said, and the man's girlfriend called 911 while the man grabbed a gun. The shooter had warned McGee multiple times that he was armed, but McGee would not stop hitting the door.

Police on Wednesday said they did not believe McGee and the man knew each other and didn't know what McGee was doing at the gated complex, but speculated that he might have been impaired.
