Dogs rescued from North Las Vegas fire available for adoption

After almost two months in The Animal Foundation’s care, some of the dogs rescued from a North Las Vegas fire that killed more than three dozen other dogs are ready to be placed in new homes.

The Animal Foundation announced Monday that 16 dogs are available for adoption after a legal hold, in place during a criminal investigation, had been lifted.

Nearly 100 dogs lived in a home at 2604 Stanley Ave., owned by North Las Vegas Councilman Isaac Barron, which caught fire on Sept. 28. It killed 41 dogs. The other 54 were taken to The Animal Foundation.

The home was rented out by two brothers. One of the men is set to appear in court Dec. 30 for a citation for having an excessive number of dogs. It is unclear if the second man will face charges.

Seven of the dogs taken to The Animal Foundation were euthanized at the recommendation of the shelter’s veterinarians, according to a Monday press release. Six puppies were also born following the fire, but only one survived. The one puppy and its mother will be placed in a foster home until the puppy is old enough for adoption.

An additional 30 dogs who have serious medical or behavioral conditions will be placed with the shelter’s local and regional rescue partners, the release stated.

The Animal Foundation is also offering two adoption specials as they face capacity issues.

For all dogs and cats 1 years old and older, the shelter is offering a “name your price” adoption special until Wednesday. Any dogs or cats 5 years and older, will have adoption fees waived as part of the “Adopt A Senior Pet Month,” that lasts until Nov. 30.

All specials include spay/neuter surgery, an address microchip, up-to-date vaccines and others. Additional requirements or fees may apply, according to the release.

All animals can be adopted at two of the shelter’s locations: 655 N. Mojave Road, near Bonanza Road, or at the PetSmart in Henderson at 286 W. Lake Mead Parkway.
