Linda Lister, director of UNLV Opera, is the 2014 winner of the American Prize in Directing, for “Sancta Susanna” and “Suor Angelica.” Lister was selected from applications reviewed this summer from across the United States. The American Prize is a series of nonprofit competitions designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles and composers in the United States based on submitted recordings.

Domingo Floresta has been awarded the 2014 AARP Nevada Andrus Award for Community Service, the organization’s most prestigious state volunteer award. The award recognizes Floresta’s service to the Las Vegas community as a volunteer leader.

Sir Adam Carmer of Las Vegas was enthroned in Brussels, Belgium, as a Knight Sept. 5 for his efforts in education, leadership and as an ambassador for Belgium and the brewing profession. Carmer founded the Freakin’ Frog, pioneering the first craft beer bar in Las Vegas, and has served as a professor at UNLV’s William F. Harrah’s College of Hotel Administration for 18 years.

U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Alexandria N. Barr graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Barr is the daughter of Lanette L. Drinkwine of Central Point, Ore., and Peter Barr of Las Vegas.

Air Force Reserve Airman Elvia A. Guzman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Guzman is the daughter of Adriana E. Guzman of Las Vegas and Jaime A. Guzman of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. She is a 2013 graduate of Chaparral High School.

The Showbiz Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing and assisting entertainers, honored brothers Joey and Frankie Scinta with the 2014 Louis Prima Award Nov. 9.

Air Force Airman Johnell Mar G. Rojas graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Rojas is the son of Charlie and Maria Flordeliza Rojas of North Las Vegas and is a 2012 graduate of Shadow Ridge High School.

Air Force Airman Michael C. Williams graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Williams is the son of Linda Parks of Henderson and is a 2010 graduate of Chaparral High School.

Area students who graduated from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore., in 2013-14 include Megan Brown and Theresa Novatney, both of Las Vegas, and Kaeo Helekahi of North Las Vegas.

The Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, Calif., named local students to the 2014-15 honor roll: Duran Heath and Connor Patton of Las Vegas. It also named Drayson Little and Johnlord Sy of Las Vegas to the 2014-15 dean’s list.

Professional Bull Riders hosted the annual PBR Charity Golf Tournament on Oct. 21 at Rhodes Ranch Golf Course and raised $12,000 for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada. The group presented a check to the foundation on Oct. 23.
