Driver suspected of DUI in fatal hit-and-run on Friday night

A pedestrian died after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver Friday evening, Las Vegas police said.

In a press release on Saturday, Metro said a 2008 Jeep Liberty traveling west on Spring Mountain Road near Stober Boulevard about 6:30 p.m. struck and killed a 69-year-old man. The pedestrian was walking outside of a marked crosswalk, the release said.

The Jeep driver left the scene. The pedestrian was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

The driver of the Jeep, 35-year-old Peter Mitchel of Las Vegas, and his passenger returned to the scene about an hour later. Mitchel was arrested after showing signs of impairment from alcohol, the release said, and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. He faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, police said.

The name of the pedestrian will be released by the Clark County coroner's office.

This is the 14th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction in 2016.
