Fact-finding review in NLV police shooting set for Friday

The public can attend or watch a televised fact-finding review Friday of a July police shooting that killed a man in North Las Vegas.

Kenneth Alan Johnson, 34, died July 18 after a North Las Vegas police stop on West Ann Road, near the intersection of Camino al Norte. Johnson was on a moped, and police initial chased him in a patrol car. He got off the moped and ran, eventually turning to confront officers who tailed him.

When he did that, police said, Johnson pulled a pellet gun that resembled a black semi-automatic weapon.

Officer Robert Makinster fired, striking Johnson, who later died at University Medical Center. Makinster also was involved in a deadly police shooting in March, the department said in July.

The review is set for 9 a.m. Friday in Clark County Government Center chambers, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, according to a county news release. It will be aired live on Clark County Television and streamed on the county’s website at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov. CCTV is on channel 4 for Cox Cable and CenturyLink customers (channel 89.13 for those without converter boxes) and on channel 14 in Laughlin via CMA Access.

Fact-finding reviews happen after a police-involved shooting results in a death and after the Clark County district attorney’s office decides officers won’t face criminal charges.

An ombudsman represent’s the public family of the person killed. The DA’s office presents evidence and witnesses, but only for information. No decision is made.

Observers may submit written questions to the presiding officer, who can choose whether to include them.
