Fatal shooting suspect found dead

The only suspect in a March 13 shooting was found dead Wednesday morning near Tropicana Avenue and Spencer Street.

Las Vegas police responded about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday to the 1900 block of East Tropicana Avenue where they found 27-year-old Joseph Lucero dead.

Lucero was being sought by police in connection with the death of 23-year-old Zachary Layne Girdner.

According to police, Girdner and Lucero had an argument at Lucero’s apartment in the 7200 block of Las Vegas Boulevard. Police arrived about 7:20 p.m. but didn’t find anything. About 10 minutes later, Nevada Highway Patrol found Girdner in a Jeep that had crashed into three vehicles near the Beltway and Eastern Avenue.

Girdner died of multiple gunshot wounds according to the Clark County Coroner’s office. His death was ruled a homicide.

The coroner’s office will release the cause and manner of Lucero’s death.
