Gas service restored to most customers in Henderson
February 5, 2015 - 12:28 pm
Southwest Gas announced Thursday that service has been restored to more than 4,800 of the over 5,000 Henderson customers affected by an outage.
Fewer than 300 homes remained with no gas about noon as crews continue the work. The timeline for a full restoration “depends on when we’ll have access to those homes,” said Sonya Headen, a spokeswoman for the utility.
Workers have gone door-to-door to turn the gas meter off and then turning the pilot light back on. Customers were advised against lighting their own pilot lights for safety reasons.
An adult must be present when crews show up, otherwise they will return to visit two more times before customers have to make a phone call to schedule service.
Free showers were available at the Heritage Park Aquatic Center, 300 Racetrack Road, Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Southwest Gas said. That will continue to be until service is fully restored.
As of noon Thursday, only five people had taken advantage of the showers, Headen said.
Customer service representatives were also sent to the Clark County Heritage Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway, to help customers sign up for online accounts and text message alerts. They will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. until service returns for everyone.
It wasn’t immediately known how many customers met with the representatives, Headen said. Some customers were given $25 gift cards to a variety of restaurants.
The vast outage began Tuesday afternoon when crews, while conducting a survey, found gas traces in dirt around the area of Old Vegas Trail, Boulder Highway and Wagon Wheel Drive, the utility said Wednesday.
