Hiker falls to death in Red Rock Canyon

A man is dead after an apparent fall during a hike Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Las Vegas police said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened, but the man, described as being in his early 20s, was hiking and possibly wall climbing when he fell shortly before 4 p.m. at Black Velvet Canyon, Metro Lt. Ken Romane said. A paramedic who happened to be in the area tried aiding him, but the man did not survive his injuries, Romane said.

Metro’s search and rescue unit was working on recovering the body Saturday evening, Romane said.

The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the man after his family has been notified.
