Hundreds gather for LV walk for homeless
Hundreds of people gathered at the Las Vegas Review-Journal to walk in the shoes of the homeless on Saturday morning.
The Las Vegas Rescue Mission’s third annual Walk a Mile in My Shoes event kicked off at 9 a.m. to raise awareness about the plight of homeless locals, especially in the heat of the summer.
“The biggest goal is creating another level of awareness in the community of the men, women and families who have no relief from the heat,” said John Fogal, the rescue mission’s director of development.
Marie Timms, who has participated in the walk all three years now, said her dad taught her the importance of taking care of the less fortunate.
“The Las Vegas Rescue Mission doesn’t just feed the stomach and the body,” Timms said. “They feed the soul.”
After the walk Timms won an award for the most money raised individually. Wells Fargo also received an award for bringing the largest group of walkers.
Other sponsors included Nevada State Bank, Kohl’s, Konami Gaming and the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
“I just want to thank the community for its support,” Fogal said, “not only for events like this and this organization, but for organizations throughout the valley.”
