Intruder shot, killed during home invasion in southeast valley

A man who broke into a southeast valley apartment Saturday afternoon was fatally shot by the apartment's resident, Las Vegas police said.

Lt. Ray Steiber said four men invaded a home about 2 p.m. at Las Palomas Apartments, 4040 Boulder Highway near Desert Inn Road.

Steiber said the four, who were said to be between the ages of 30 and 50, broke into a man's apartment and a "small gunbattle ensued."

The resident and at least one of the home invaders were armed with guns, Steiber said. He said the resident might have been targeted.

He added that one of the men died from his injuries in the complex after leaving the apartment. The other three fled and had not been arrested as of 4:30 p.m. One of the men who fled might have sustained injuries.

None of the complex's residents was injured during the shooting.

The names of the resident and the deceased man were not released.

Steiber said the resident was cooperating with police. Investigators haven't determined whether to recommend charges against him.

Late Saturday afternoon, police tape blocked off much of the complex. Some residents were told by investigators they couldn't return to their homes until the police investigation was completed.

Miguel Benitez, who has lived at the complex since March, said in Spanish he was inside his apartment and didn't hear the gunfire.

Benitez, who lives in an apartment with his wife and 23-year-old daughter, said his neighborhood is generally quiet, but Saturday's shooting has scared him to the point that he's considering moving.

"It's something that definitely is concerning for me, and anybody else in this complex who has a family," he said in Spanish.

Anyone with information on this shooting is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
