Las Vegas heating up with warm temperatures
While spring does not officially begin until Wednesday, it’s already starting to feel like summer in Las Vegas and across the Southwestern United States.
Friday’s temperatures in the valley were expected to shatter the previous record high set in 2007 but instead met the 87 degree record around 5 p.m. at McCarran International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.
Surrounding areas such as Needles, Calif., and Kingman, Ariz., saw record highs Thursday. Kingman broke a record set in 1934 by two degrees with a high of 86 degrees.
The NWS said the warmer temperatures are because of a strong and stationary high-pressure system in the Southwest.
Above-averages temperatures are expected to linger, but gradually decrease over the next few days.
Temperatures should return to the normal lower 70s by the middle of next week, with strong winds and cooler temperatures expected in time for spring — Wednesday.
