A Las Vegas police dog scheduled for retirement died unexpectedly after a search Monday, the department reported Tuesday.
Metro K-9 Boris finished a search about 5 a.m. Monday and died hours later, police said. The 10-year-old dog had a long partnership with officer DuWayne Layton.
“He loved every moment of his job as a crime-fighter,” Metro announced on Facebook.
The department said Boris loved special events such as visiting Kahre Elementary School.
Boris was scheduled to retire to a 2.5-acre estate in Washington, police said.
His cause of death has not been released.
“He was a trusted friend and partner. He brightened the lives of so many kids and caught a lot of bad-guys. Together we shared some fun times, hard times and some scary nights working in Las Vegas. His partner always felt safe knowing Boris was leading the way. We are going to miss you our friend,” Friends of the Las Vegas Police K-9s said on Facebook.
