The officer who shot a woman brandishing kitchen knives Friday has been identified by Las Vegas police.
Police said Sgt. Esmeralda Boveda, 29, shot two rounds at 49-year-old Tania Torres-Espinoza when she rushed at her with two large knives from 5 feet away.
Torres-Espinoza was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and was booked in absentia. She is being charged with domestic-related assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, and resisting a public officer with a weapon.
Boveda has been with Metro since Jan. 2003. She is currently assigned to the southeast precinct and has been placed on paid leave pending a review of the event.
