Light rain dampens Las Vegas; triple-digit heat to return Monday

Dark clouds massed over the Las Vegas Valley on Saturday, decorating the holiday weekend with sprinkling rain and gentle breezes.

The National Weather Service’s Las Vegas office measured one hundredth of an inch of rain just before sunset. Other monitoring stations around the valley recorded only trace amounts of precipitation.

The rain clouds came in on the tail-end of a low-pressure system that’s been hovering over the valley all week, said weather service meteorologist Chris Stumpf.

Heavier showers fell around Mesquite and the Nevada-Arizona border as the system headed toward the Four Corners area. As it passes farther away, the wind should die down, he said.

Stumpf expected the sprinkles to continue overnight, but warmer weather will return Sunday. The valley will feel triple-digit temperatures Monday, and Tuesday should be even hotter.

“It should be a fairly pleasant Memorial Day weekend, minus today,” Stumpf said.
