Man arrested on a murder charge after double stabbing

A 50-year-old man was arrested on a murder charge after a double stabbing last week that left one man dead and another injured.

John Russell was charged with murder and attempted murder, according to a Las Vegas police report released Tuesday.

He’s accused of killing Jeffree Bender, 28, and wounding Calvin Beasley, just after midnight Thursday.

Beasley told Metro detectives he was sitting on the stairs of an apartment building at 2305 Exeter Drive, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Los Feliz Street, when he saw five men beating another man, later identified as Bender. When Beasley went to intervene, one of the men stabbed him in the stomach, he told police.

Bender later died at University Medical Center.

Beasley survived and identified Russell as the man who stabbed him and Bender.

A warrant for Russell’s arrest was issued Friday. He was arrested by Metro and booked at the Clark County jail Monday.
