Man dead after early morning scooter crash

A 27-year-old man died early Saturday morning in a northwest valley scooter crash, according to Las Vegas police.

Metro officers were called about 12:50 a.m. to North Tenaya Way, south of Centennial Parkway, where a 2006 Jeep Cherokee collided with a 2013 Tao Tao scooter, police wrote in a release.

Spencer Heywood Hanshew, 27, of Las Vegas, was driving the scooter north on Tenaya when the Jeep traveling the same direction began to pass him. Hanshew entered the jeep's path, the release said.

The front of the Jeep struck the back of the scooter and Hanshew was thrown onto the roadway. He was taken to University Medical Center where he died, the release said.

The 31-year-old Las Vegas man driving the Jeep and the 30-year-old Las Vegas woman and 32-year-old Vermont woman who were passengers in the Jeep were not injured in the wreck.

This was the 80th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
