Man in critical condition after shooting near Centennial Hospital

A man was in critical condition Thursday after he was shot by a security guard Wednesday night near Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center, Las Vegas police said.

Metro police were called about 7:15 p.m. to an apartment complex at 6955 N. Durango Drive, south of Dorrell Lane, where the man, whose age was unknown, had been shot, Lt. Mike Rodriguez said.

A security guard at the apartment complex was on duty as the man, who appeared intoxicated and belligerent, attempted to get into the complex, according to Rodriguez. After not being able to get in, the man got back into his car and attempted to drive away.

The security guard tried to stop the man from driving away by reaching into his vehicle, Rodriguez said. The driver proceeded to drive away as the security guard was hanging on from the outside of the car. The security guard then shot the driver twice, according to police.

The car rolled over the center median and into traffic on Durango Drive. Another vehicle hit the fleeing car. Durango was shut down in front of the hospital during Metro's preliminary investigation, Lt. Laura Meltzer said.

The wounded man was taken to University Medical Center, police said.

Because there were numerous witnesses, Metro is expecting a long and large investigation, Meltzer said.
