Man lying in street jumps on car, scares Las Vegas family

A Las Vegas couple recorded a man they say was lying in a busy street Wednesday evening before he jumped on the hood of their car, making odd noises and acting threateningly toward their family.

Jason Schuck was driving on Jones Boulevard near Oakey Drive on his way to a barbecue when cars in front of him began to slow. When the car in front of him merged to another lane, he and his family — his girlfriend and 8-year-old son — noticed a man on his back in the middle of the road.

The man was lying in the street “with his arms flailing,” Schuck said. Then the man ran toward his car and jumped on the hood, “like something from the movies,” according to Schuck.

He said the man was making strange noises and that his “mouth was wide open and his eyes were glazed over.” For the next 45 seconds, as seen in the video, the man acted as if he wanted to attack them.

Schuck’s girlfriend began recording once the man landed on the hood of the car, fearing the situation would escalate.

“I don’t know if he has a gun, if he has a knife, I’m not sure what he has. What do you do in this kind of situation?” Schuck said.

Seconds after making the call to 911, a motorcycle officer arrived on scene — an officer who Schuck “can’t thank enough” for immediately calming down the man and getting him off the hood of his car.

“I believe it was (the officer) who saved my family from a very bad situation,” Schuck said. “He diffused what I believe was a ticking time bomb.”

Metro spokesman Jesse Roybal said the man was taken to the hospital. No other details were available.
