Man who crashed into wall died of natural causes, coroner concludes

The Clark County coroner ruled the manner of death as natural for a man who crashed into a wall near the Las Vegas Strip in December.

Dominic F. Savelio, 50, was driving a 2006 Dodge Caravan west on Jay Sarno Way about 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 13 when he came to a stop at a red traffic signal. He then continued through the intersection about 25 to 30 mph across Frank Sinatra Drive and into a block wall, police said.

Sometime before the crash, Savelio suffered a medical episode. The coroner ruled his cause of death as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, or atherosclerosis.

"This progressive process silently and slowly blocks arteries, putting blood flow at risk," according to WebMD. "Atherosclerosis is the usual cause of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in America, with more than 800,000 deaths in 2005," the website states.

Savelio was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
