Metro beefs up Strip presence after Orlando nightclub mass killing

In the wake of the Orlando, Florida, shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department has reallocated resources to have a heavier presence on the Strip.

“We increased our footprint in the resort corridor,” Assistant Sheriff Todd Fasulo said.

Those efforts include a maintained connection with federal agencies, daily internal meetings, working closely with casino security staff and an “overall increased counterterrorism posture in the valley,” Metro Lt. Jeff Goodwin said Sunday.

Fasulo said the department has contacted the nightclub industry and the LGBT community and is increasing its presence in clubs.

“You might see cops showing up in places you don’t normally see them in some of these venues,” Fasulo said.“Any of the gay clubs that are on the Strip, we’re definitely making trips to.”

Metro had a strong presence at the Sunday vigil and has been in touch with the LGBT community, Fasulo said.

The department is reaching out to mosques, too, he said.

Metro is providing the increased presence through a combination of redeploying officers and calling in additional officers, Fasulo said.

While noting Las Vegas hasn’t received any threats, Fasulo said, “The public needs to remain vigilant and stay together and stay strong.”

People should always be aware of their surroundings and be cognizant of where security and exits are, Fasulo said. The public should report concerns to police, he added.
