Metro identifies officer involved in weekend fatal shooting

Metro on Monday identified the officer who shot and killed a man police said was armed during a weekend foot chase.

Walter Young III, 33, is an eight-year veteran from Metro's Northeast Area Command, the police department said in a news release. He's on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Police were called about 3:17 a.m. Saturday about a theft at the Siegel Slots and Suites, 5011 E. Craig Road, near the intersection at Nellis Boulevard.

A witness description led police to a vehicle with three occupants, which was pulled over on East Cheyenne Avenue, on the Interstate 15 overpass in North Las Vegas, Metro said.

Two people were detained, police said, but James Marcus Brown, 25, got away and ran into a desert lot.

Officers said Brown had a gun in his hand while he ran. He did not follow several orders to stop and drop the weapon.

Young deployed a stun gun on Brown, Metro said, but it didn't stop him.

When the chase neared Losee Road and East Sharp Circle, Brown — gun still in hand — turned toward Young, Metro said. That's when Young fired several rounds.

Brown was taken to University Medical Center, where he died from a gunshot wound to the chest, the Clark County coroner's office said.
