Metro names officers involved in weekend fatal shooting

Las Vegas police have identified two officers involved in a fatal shooting over the weekend.

They are officers Michael Walters, 53, and Charles Moser, 46.

Metro patrol and SWAT officers responded to the 400 block of Lakehurst Road, near the intersection of Alta Drive and Antelope Way, about 7:30 a.m., where police said a man carrying a rifle was coming in and out of his home and screaming.

After almost two hours of negotiating, the man, who was identified as 57-year-old William Lee Snider, came out of his home, ignored negotiators’ order to drop the rifle and pointed it toward officers.

Officers then fired on Snider, police said.

Snider was taken to University Medical Center, where he died.

Walters has been with Metro since January 1998. Moser has been with Metro since September 2000. Both work for the department's Emergency Operations Bureau, SWAT section and have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal review of this event.

Moser, a SWAT sniper, was involved in another fatal shooting in March 2014 that killed 58-year-old Ronald Tate near the Jean Airport. A sky diving company called police when Tate threatened them with a gun. Tate was shot about 20 minutes after officers said he chambered a round after they confronted him.

In April, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said no charges would be filed in the fatal shooting of Tate as Moser's actions were reasonably and legally justified.
