Metro rescues injured hiker at Ice Box Canyon
September 16, 2015 - 6:55 pm
A female hiker who fell Wednesday afternoon in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area was recovered by Metro's search and rescue team.
Las Vegas police got a call just before 12:30 p.m. reporting a hiker, whose age was not available, fell in Ice Box Canyon and might have broken her leg or legs, Metro spokeswoman Officer Laura Meltzer said. The department said just after 5 p.m. that the hiker had been taken to University Medical Center.
It is unclear how far the hiker fell, said Meltzer.
The rescue team's helicopter was struggling in the valley's windy conditions. Some search and rescue workers were in the canyon with the hiker, trying to get her to an area with better helicopter access.
Her injuries didn't appear as serious as crews initially thought, according to fire department employees at the head of Ice Box Canyon Trail. The helicopter brought the hiker to the head of the trail and an ambulance took her to the hospital. An update on her condition was not immediately available.
