Eighteen new firefighters will be hired in North Las Vegas, with help from a $3.67 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program.
The North Las Vegas City Council unanimously agreed Wednesday night to accept the grant, which will help pay for the salaries of nine firefighters and nine firefighter-paramedics. The new recruits are expected to start work within six months, joining the city’s current staff of 142 uniformed firefighters, Fire Chief Jeff Lytle told the City Council.
“This is a game changer for us,” Lytle said.
