Police: Woman wounded as love triangle takes violent turn

A woman who survived being shot in the head Saturday may have been ambushed for not taking the morning-after pill, according to arrest records obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Monday.

Metro officers called to an apartment complex at 5400 W. Cheyenne Ave., near Rancho Drive, found Breyana Lewis with a bullet fragment in her head. Lewis was shot at multiple times while in her car in the parking lot.

Daquesha Fowler, 20, and Gregory Myrick, 21, were taken into custody in connection with the shooting about two hours later. Arrest records detail a love triangle taking a violent turn.

Lewis told officers with Las Vegas police’s Violent Crimes Section that she had been having a sexual relationship with Myrick for two months, and Fowler, who was Myrick’s fiancee, fired at her with a type of green, long gun rifle, the report said.

Lewis told police that she was having an argument with Myrick, who was angry at her for not taking the morning-after pill and possibly being pregnant. During their exchange, Myrick was texting someone.

Afterward, Lewis drove Myrick to his apartment complex. As soon as he got out of the vehicle, someone shot at her at least twice. Police said Fowler was firing on the car from a second-floor patio in an “ambush style attack,” the report said.

Lewis escaped and drove to another location to call 911. An examination at University Medical Center revealed she had a single gunshot to her upper right forehead. The bullet did not pierce her skull, however, and travelled around the cranium to the top of her head, where it remains.

Police said the injury was not life-threatening, and told the Review Journal on Saturday that Lewis was released later that afternoon.

Officers discovered Fowler and Myrick at an apartment nearby. Inside they found a green Savage Model 64 .22 caliber long rifle in a closet.

“I gave the gun to her and told her to shoot her,” Myrick reportedly said in a “spontaneous utterance,” according to the arrest report.

Myrick, recently released from prison for a robbery, told police that Fowler called him and said Lewis was driving around the complex and intimidating her. Myrick told Fowler to use the rifle to defend herself and their three children, the report said. Myrick told police that they would find his fingerprints on the gun, which he said belongs to a cousin, the report said.

Fowler described a similar situation during her interview, but she said it was her decision to shoot at Lewis and did not mention making a call to Myrick. She couldn’t describe the danger she felt from Lewis and did not think to call police, the report said.

Police said both suspects were read their rights and chose to continue to cooperate.

After obtaining a search warrant, police found an empty .22 long caliber casing in Fowler and Myrick’s apartment, but none were found on the patio, the report said. Five spent rifle cartridges were found on the bottom of the stairway leading to the second-floor landing.

Police found four bullet holes in Lewis’ car. The shot that hit her in the forehead travelled through the windshield.

Documents from the district attorney’s office show that Myrick and Fowler are both facing a count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. Fowler is facing additional charges of firing a gun at a vehicle and firing a gun from an occupied building. Myrick is facing an additional charge of felony possession of a firearm by an ex-felon.

The 72-hour hearing for Myrick and Fowler is set for Wednesday morning.
