Replacement of over 100 Nevada historical markers celebrated Friday

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced the ceremonial replacement Friday of more than 100 historical markers as part of the state's 150th birthday celebration.

It happened at Historic Marker 40, which notes the meadows at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd., according to a news release from the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office. Over the past year, 116 markers have been replaced throughout the state.

The historic preservation office, a division of the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, manages 266 total markers. Many were in need of repair after being vandalized and neglected.

The Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission contributed $165,000 to the project, and $50,000 more came from private donations.

Nevada turned 150 in 2014. It got the nickname "Battle Born" it was one of only two states — the other being West Virginia — to enter the Union during the Civil War.
