San Diego police ID Las Vegas Boy Scout killed by gunfire

The 12-year-old Las Vegas boy who died from an apparent gunshot wound Monday while at a Boy Scout camp in San Diego has been identified.

The San Diego medical examiner’s office said Tuesday the boy was William Shook. His cause and manner of death had not been determined. San Diego police are still investigating.

San Diego police responded to a dispatch call for an attempted suicide at 1750 Fiesta Island Road on Monday just after 7:30 a.m.

Officers found William with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, and medics pronounced William dead at the scene with a handgun nearby, San Diego police said.

The preliminary investigation revealed William was part of a Boy Scout Troop from Las Vegas, which was in the area for a week-long camping trip and arrived on Sunday.

San Diego police said crisis intervention personnel and clergy were at the scene to assist witnesses.

Homicide and child abuse investigators conducted witness interviews to find out how a gun became involved, and forensic laboratory personnel processed evidence at the scene.

Anyone with more information can call the San Diego police homicide unit or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
