Some dogs rescued from NLV house fire may be put up for adoption

Some of the dogs rescued from a North Las Vegas house fire in September may be available for adoption soon, the Animal Foundation announced Friday.

The legal hold on dogs rescued after the Sept.28 blaze — in a home owned by North Las Vegas Councilman Isaac Barron — has been lifted, according to the foundation.

Fire officials found nearly 100 dogs in the home at 2604 Stanley Ave. Forty-one dogs died in the fire.

The surviving dogs, which have been under Animal Foundation veterinary care since then, are undergoing health and temperament evaluations that will continue through the weekend, the organization said in a news release.

Depending on the results for each dog, the foundation will decide if each animal will be put up for adoption, placed in a foster home or placed with a local rescue organization partner.

Anyone interested in fostering one of the dogs can visit www.animalfoundation.com/get-involved.

Dogs suitable for adoption will be made available next week at the Animal Foundation’s Campus Adoption Center via the shelter’s normal adoption process.

The foundation said it will make another announcement Monday afternoon with details about the availability of the dogs.

Barron was renting the Stanley Avenue house to two brothers, one of whom is set to appear in court Dec. 30 for a citation for having an excessive number of dogs.

The court date is also the soonest an animal cruelty charge can be filed against the renter, North Las Vegas police spokeswoman Sgt. Chrissie Coon said Nov. 6. An animal cruelty charge would depend on the outcome of an examination of the dogs’ health, Coon said.

Although Coon said earlier this month that the end of the legal hold would mark the end of the investigation of the dogs’ conditions, North Las Vegas police were not available Friday to comment on the findings of the examinations.

It is unclear if the second renter will also face charges, Coon said.
