Two months after crash, Metro announces woman lost her not-yet born baby

After a critical-injury crash in February, a pregnant woman who was rushed to University Medical Center lost her not-yet-born baby, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Thursday.

The crash happened Feb. 13, and the delay in announcing the baby’s death was because Metro wasn’t notified the pregnant woman’s baby had died that day, spokesman Jesse Roybal said. Instead, they made the realization March 25 when the girl’s autopsy results were complete.

“That’s a very normal time frame to determine a cause and manner of death,” county Coroner John Fudenberg said Thursday.

The February crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. when the woman, Allisha Griggs, 26, went to turn left onto northbound Durango Drive from the eastbound lane of Charleston Boulevard in her red 2014 Ford Focus.

As she turned left into the intersection, Timothy Villa, 25, was heading westbound on Charleston and slammed his green 2003 Chevorlet Suburban into Griggs’ car.

Villa wasn’t seriously injured, but Griggs was taken to UMC in critical condition. While in surgery she lost her baby, whom she named Kendall, according to a Facebook post in March.

“Losing you may be the hardest thing I have ever experienced,” the woman wrote in a post dated March 7, accompanied with a photo of her family touching her belly. She thanked the baby for saving her life, ending the post with, “I love you baby girl!”

Rest in heaven Kendall! Losing you may be the hardest thing I have ever experienced. I know you served your purpose and...

The coroner’s office ruled the baby died from an accident and suffered blunt force motor-vehicle trauma. Officials estimated “Baby girl Griggs” was about 35 weeks along.

Metro said the crash is under investigation despite the delay, adding the girl’s death was its 32nd traffic-related fatality this year.
