You can recycle your Christmas tree through UNLV

LAS VEGAS — The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is again highlighting a program to recycle Christmas trees.

The program begins Friday and runs through Jan. 15, with more than 30 drop-off locations around the valley — including many local parks and neighborhood Lowe’s stores.

UNLV Rebel Recycling director Tara Pike-Nordstrom says more than 15,000 trees were recycled last year, producing 133 tons of chipped mulch for landscaping projects and dust control.

She figures that diverted enough landfill material to fill about eight school buses.

Program officials ask people to remove anything that isn’t part of a natural tree, including lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails and tree stands — and to cut trees more than 5 feet tall in half.
