Driver dies in fiery hit-and-run crash in North Las Vegas

One person was killed early Sunday when their car caught fire after it was struck from behind by another car whose occupants fled the scene on foot, North Las Vegas police said.

Officers responded to the crash at Centennial Parkway and Bruce Street at about 1:30 a.m. to find a Hyundai Sonata fully engulfed in flames and a 2020 Dodge Challenger with heavy front-end damage, according to a North Las Vegas Police Department news release.

After the blaze was put out by the North Las Vegas Fire Department, a body was found in the Hyundai. The person, whose identity hadn’t yet been released, had been the only occupant of the Hyundai, police said.

Police said investigators pieced together the preliminary details of what happened. The Challenger had been heading west on Centennial Parkway toward Bruce Street at a “high rate of speed,” police said.

The Challenger then hit the back of the Sonata, which had also been traveling west on Centennial Parkway ahead of the Challenger. The Sonata then burst into flames.

“The occupants of the Dodge Challenger then fled the scene on foot,” police said.

Speed and impairment were both considered to be factors, police said.

The identity of the person killed will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office.
