1 person killed in Thursday morning crash in central Las Vegas

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck Thursday morning in central Las Vegas.

About 5:09 a.m., the Metropolitan Police Department received a report of a fatal collision, police said.

According to Metro, a 1999 Ford Ranger, driven by 36-year-old Victor Rivera-Gonzalez, was traveling east on East Sahara Avenue, near the intersection with Burnham Avenue, while a pedestrian, identified only as a man possibly in his 50s, was crossing Sahara.

The front right of the Ford struck the pedestrian on his right side, and the driver did not remain at the scene of the collision, according to a Metro news release. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Rivera-Gonzalez later returned to the scene of the collision, where he passed field sobriety tests.

He was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, police said.

The name of the pedestrian will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office once his family has been notified.

Metro said his death was the 64th traffic-related fatality in its jurisdiction for 2016.

It is unclear whether the man was crossing at a marked crosswalk.

No other details were immediately available.
