70s in Las Vegas Valley ahead of possible weekend rain

Updated February 27, 2019 - 9:06 pm

Wednesday was 72 degrees and sunny in the Las Vegas Valley, a stark difference from a week ago when the area was blanketed by a rare snowstorm.

“That is usually how the weather works,” National Weather Service meteorologist Caleb Steele said Wednesday afternoon, just minutes after the valley officially reached 72. “For one extreme, there is another extreme.”

The warming trend was expected to continue through the weekend, with highs near 72 on Thursday and Friday ahead of a storm system entering the valley Saturday. Overnight lows during that period will be near 50.

Weekend temperatures will reach 69 during the day before dipping to 50 and 49 overnight on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, the weather service said.

“We have a pretty nice week set up,” meteorologist John Salmen said.

This week’s warm weather will be punctuated by periods of slight breeziness on Thursday and Friday, though wind speeds shouldn’t be more than 8 mph, the weather service said.

Saturday is expected to be calm and mostly sunny with a 40 percent chance for rain in the morning. Sunday will be mostly sunny and dry and should be a “pretty nice day overall,” Salmen said.
