May the rain be with you: Las Vegas breaks May 4 record

Sunday was an unusually wet day for the Las Vegas Valley in early May.

The National Weather Service said Sunday rainfall totals ranged from 0.02 to 0.36 inches, with several gauges in the Spring Mountains totaling over 0.50 inches.

Harry Reid International Airport registered 0.30 inches.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Sunday afternoon for Willow Beach and U.S. Highway 93 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area due to heavy rainfall in the area.

As of 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the Spring Mountains and Las Vegas Range had recorded 0.20 inches and 0.31 inches of rain, respectively, for the day, according to the Clark County Flood Control District.

Flood gauges in southeast Henderson and Spring Valley also recorded as much as 0.20 inches of rain in some areas, while flood gauges across rest of the valley saw between 0.04 and 0.12 inches.

Precipitation record broken

A daily weather record was broken in the Las Vegas Valley on Sunday morning.

The weather service said in an X post that the daily precipitation record for May 4 was broken around 5:23 a.m. Sunday with 0.05 inches of rain. The previous daily precipitation record was broken on May 4, 1982, with 0.03 inches of rain.

Rain continues through Tuesday

Rain in the Las Vegas Valley was expected to continue into Monday with a 60 percent chance of rain in the forecast and a 30 percent chance of rain in the evening. Monday’s high temperature is expected to reach 70 degrees with a low of 60.

Tuesday is the last day for a chance of rain in the Las Vegas Valley this week with a 20 percent chance of rain and isolated showers expected during the day. Conditions are expected to clear up Wednesday with a high of 83 degrees, and reach the 90s starting Friday, according to the weather service.
