SUNSET GIRLS: Arbor View too strong for Bonanza in region quarters

A violation of team rules landed Dana Lewis on the bench at the start of Tuesday’s Sunset Region quarterfinal game.

It didn’t have a lasting effect on the Arbor View senior post’s rebounding skills.

Lewis came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 15 rebounds to help the Aggies to a 51-28 win over visiting Bonanza. Arbor View will face Centennial (22-5) in a region semifinal at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Durango.

“She had an infraction. It was a consequence,” Arbor View coach Donna Gentry said. “We missed her rebounding at the start. She’s like a machine, at times. I feel like I have to yell at some of the other girls to remind them that it’s not just Dana that has to rebound. We all have to hit the boards.”

Lewis sat as the Aggies (20-8) started slowly. Arbor View, making just its second postseason appearance in school history, was 0-for-6 with one turnover on its first six possessions.

“The girls were a little nervous,” said Gentry, whose team lost a home game to Cimarron-Memorial in the region quarterfinals last year. “They didn’t want to see a similar result as last year.”

But Lewis and Ariona Gill, who both usually start, came off the bench just more than three minutes into the game to spark a 6-0 run in a 37-second span. Gill didn’t start because of an illness.

Bonanza (14-9) led only once more, at 7-6 just past the midway point of the second quarter as Lewis and fellow post Janae Strode began to dominate the paint.

Strode finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds as the Aggies outscored the Bengals 36-12 in the paint.

Katrina Nordstrom scored 10 points, including two 3-pointers that immediately followed Bengal 3-pointers, for Arbor View.

Arbor View also played well defensively, as Bonanza got few open looks and shot dreadfully. The Bengals were 11-for-60 from the field (18.3 percent) and committed 22 turnovers.

“We just tried to pressure them and not give them time to try to pick us apart or pick and choose where they want to pass,” Gentry said.

Tanganika Hunt paced Bonanza with 17 points, and point guard Acacia Williams had 11 rebounds for the Bengals, who were bidding for their first postseason victory since 2008.

“We got over the hump with the first win,” Gentry said. “But we have a mountain ahead of us.”

Legacy 52, Durango 41 — At Durango, Carolina Rahkonen scored 26 points to help the Longhorns down the Trailblazers.

Charleea Armstrong added 10 points for Legacy, which led 37-34 going into the fourth quarter. The Longhorns (17-9) will play Bishop Gorman (20-5) in the semifinals at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Durango.

Jazmin Chavez had 24 points for Durango (17-8), which cut the lead to four with about four minutes to play, but could get no closer.

Centennial 67, Palo Verde 29 — At Centennial, Tramina Jordan had 15 points to help the Bulldogs rout the Panthers.

Paige Barber added 10 points, and Karina Brandon and Courtney Walker each scored nine for Centennial, which led 18-3 after one quarter and 48-12 at the half.

Brooklyn Cruz led Palo Verde (11-16) with 13 points.

Bishop Gorman 64, Shadow Ridge 25 — At Bishop Gorman, Megan Jacobs scored 16 points, and Raychel Stanley added 13 points to lift the Gaels to a win over the Mustangs.

Skylar Jackson and Sandria Bolden each added eight points for Gorman.

Kaila Hurley had eight points to lead Shadow Ridge (11-12).
