Democracy Prep edges Del Sol

Democracy Prep managed just 71 yards of offense on Saturday night.

It didn’t matter.

Keionte Scott returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, and the Blue Knights held off Del Sol 9-7 at Rancho.

The Blue Knights (2-5, 1-1 Sunset League), also benefited from a 32-yard field goal by Keith Jones. The Dragons (4-3, 1-1) were unable to maintain any offensive consistency throughout the game.

Sayvyon Smith had a sack and fumble recovery on Del Sol’s first drive following Scott’s kickoff return, giving Democracy Prep the ball deep in Dragons territory.

Four plays later, Jones connected on the field with 3:20 to go in the first quarter, and Democracy Prep held a 9-0 halftime lead.

Early in the second half, Del Sol decided to rely on running of Trey Alexander. Alexander, who led Del Sol with 84 rushing yards, broke loose for a 24-yard run that led to Del Sol’s only score of the game.

Quarterback Andre Nevarez scored on a 1-yard run with 5:46 to go in the third quarter to cut the lead to 9-7, but the Dragons (4-3, 1-1) wouldn’t score again.

Nevarez completed 11 of 22 passes for 145 yards, but was intercepted twice.
